Fred Slegg Obituary, Death- We regret to inform you of the demise of our previous President, Fred Slegg, who was adored by many. A hole has been left in the lives of those who knew Fred after he passed away over the weekend. Fred was, without a doubt, ‘Mr. Warlingham RFC,’ and his name will forever be associated with hard work, enthusiasm, and loyalty to our beloved club.
The adventure Fred had with the Warlingham RFC was truly remarkable. His legendary status as a fly-half is attested to by the fact that he was a revelation on the field and a model teammate. His impact, though, was felt well beyond the rugby field. From 1993 until 1997, Fred served without complaint in the roles of Chairman, Chairman of Selection, and President.
His lifelong commitment to the club was instrumental in making WRFC what it is today, as we celebrate 100 years of club history with great pride. Fred left an indelible mark on the lives of everyone he met, and his legacy will be remembered not simply for the positions he held or the things he accomplished.
Many members have shared touching memories of him, attesting to the profound impact he had on our lives. For an incredible 19 years, Fred served as Chairman of Selection, getting to know each player on a personal and passionate level while Warlingham fielded 7/8 teams. Because of his notoriety, missing a match with him would land you on reserve the following week.
And if you skipped a game without a good excuse, Fred would write you personally to find out what happened. Fred was a strict manager, but his kindness and concern for his employees left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of working with him.
Our hearts go out to Fred’s loved ones at this time of great sorrow. We mourn with you and remember the extraordinary man who made an incalculable impact on our lives. As details about the funeral plans become available, we will be sure to share them with you so that we may all come together to say our final goodbyes to a legend.
