Cindy Greenway Obituary, Athens, AL, Longtime Resident Has Passed Away

Cindy Greenway Obituary, Death – Cynthia (Cindy) Cotten Greenway, 68, of Athens, Alabama, died November 9, 2023. Edward Lee Cotten and JoAnne Hale had her on January 11, 1955. She is survived by her loving husband, Randal Greenway; her children Heather Necklaus Hudson (Shawn), Trey Necklaus (Shanna), Meaghan Necklaus (Leah Holley), Kyle Greenway, & Kasey Greenway; her grandchildren, Gracie Hudson, Matthew & Paisley Hudson, Brennon Hudson, Lo Capell, Emory Necklaus, Sailor Necklaus, Jules Salgado, & Nash Greenway; her loyal service dog Eli; her father Ed Cotten; and her brother and friend Mike Cot

Cindy’s mother JoAnne King and stepfather Bobby, whom she adored visiting in Destin, Florida, and Dauphin Island, Alabama, died before her. Cindy taught first grade at Athens Elementary for 33 years with iAcademy, then Title I/Reading and Math Resource for PK-3, touching many lives with her passion for teaching.

For three years, she has worked with Eli, a Labradoodle therapy dog, who comforts Athens Elementary kids, faculty, and staff. Eli is excited to return to school to continue Cindy’s legacy and passion for her kids after taking a break to care for Cindy during her illness.

Cindy was named iAcademy/Athens Elementary School 2023 teacher of the year by her peers and honored at the Athens City Schools Foundation Teacher of the Year Gratitude Banquet on November 7, 2023. Cindy earned her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Athens State University and her Master’s from Alabama A&M University.
